History of the CAFÉ RUANDA KIRAMBO

The Washing Station: The Kirambo washing station is located in Nyamasheke district, on a hill that slopes down to the shores of Lake Kivu. Built in 2008, it operated unsteadily for several years due to a lack of funding, being rented out to different operators, making it difficult for local coffee farmers to have a constant partner.

In 2017, Rwanda Trading Company (RTC) acquired the station and began operating continuously from the 2018 harvest, producing high-scoring washed and natural coffees thanks to the quality of the Red Bourbon cherries and the hard work and commitment of the farmers. The farmers supplying Kirambo are mostly small family farmers, with plots of land generally no larger than a few hundred trees. RTC has implemented programmes for agronomic training, rejuvenation of coffee trees and access to finance through savings groups and partnerships with local banks. These initiatives aim to improve coffee yields and quality, as well as have a sustainable impact on farmers' livelihoods.
