History of the ETHIOPIA WUSHWUSH COFFEE

The Region: Many varieties in Ethiopia are named after the place where they were first found and Wush Wush is no exception. Wushwush (no space) is a small area in south-western Ethiopia, not far from the renowned growing regions of Jimma and Sidamo.

Wushwush is known for its fertile highlands, where this interesting, complex and famous variety grows. This variety was first recognised internationally after it was introduced in other countries such as Colombia because its strains have a high resistance to common diseases that often affect coffee plantations. In addition to being very resistant plants, they have a relatively low yield, therefore they are more expensive to grow.

The Wushwush area in Ethiopia is inhabited by a nationality called Keficho, even the name of the locals speaks of the long tradition of coffee cultivation here. Interestingly, much of the local production has recently been converted to tea production, but the local authorities have long been monitoring this issue as tea production leads to more and more deforestation, so they support the coffee growers, as this crop does not affect the local flora and fauna.
